The Project and the Problem

Circle is a transport application for a mobile device where users can plan journeys, compare different modes of transport, and purchase their tickets all at the same time. The overall mission of this app is to encourage the adoption of public transport to lower congestion in built-up areas and reduce the emission of carbon into the atmosphere. To do this I wanted to target the online experience that users have when planning their journeys and reward them for doing this to create incentive.

The Process

I began by conducting research into the transport industry to validate my idea as up to then, my idea was subject to bias. I started looking at the different transport applications that are available to us in Northern Ireland, to read their customer reviews and empathise with other users. Through my discovery, I found a lot of different people with similar views on the current apps and services which helped justify my ambitions to improve it. Starting off the process I was also able to gather further information about the transport industry by analysing reports and articles. All of this research really helped me hit the ground running and set me up to start progressing with my idea.

I then conducted competitive research to find out what similar services do. I grouped the findings into three sections; design elements, copy, and accessibility. This allowed me to gather intricate details about these services and uncover trends between them.

From this, I developed a set of primary features that I knew had to be included in order for it to compete with other services. I analysed the tone of the copy of each competitor and used it as part of my brand development.

When I began designing my project, I knew that I wanted to start with sketches. I find that sketching is a great way to quickly experiment with different ideas and to explore different design solutions. It's a low-fidelity approach that allows me to focus on the overall experience without getting bogged down in the details. After I had sketched out a few different ideas, I moved on to creating low-fidelity mockups in Figma. These mockups helped me to refine my ideas and to create a more cohesive and consistent design.

The Outcome

A platform that aims to provide a comprehensive and user-friendly public transport service in Northern Ireland. This service aims to offer users complete transparency throughout their journey, while also making it as convenient as possible to get from point A to point B.
